PACKAGE 1: SLUM TOUR

There is a difference between knowing and understanding. Most of us stereotyped slums as run-down area with substandard housing, hazardous locations and lack of security for tenures. But do we truly understand ‘slums’ by just defining it?

Visit the slums of Bataan Shipping and Engineering Company Compound or simply BASECO. Discover the resiliency of the residents making use of their limited resources for them to survive. Experience and understand the developing slums by the bay – their livelihood, battling produce from pollution and as residents with mutualism for change. Stroll on alleys and see residents in their humble dwellings overcoming the challenge of protracted access for water and electricity. Delve deeper on the atrocities that these residents are engaging each day and see how they manage to keep their enthusiasm for tomorrows and uncertainties it bears.

  • CAMERA POLICY: Please note that we have a strict NO CAMERA policy on this tour. We try to be as less intrusive as possible and at the same time to minimize any discomfort our tour can cause to the locals. Please understand this and respect our policy.

WARNING: There are areas that could be really muddy. Please wear closed shoes. We will provide rain boots.

PACKAGE 2: CEMETERY TOUR

Cemeteries reveal a lot about a place and its people. In the Philippines, most cemeteries possess a community that has given them opportunity to work and live. You will meet some of the people who were born in the Manila North Cemetery and have lived their lives here for decades. They say that living with the dead provides peace, which they cannot obtain living on the streets. And for some, being in the cemetery has helped them believe that life really goes beyond the grave.

  • Dangwa: Visit the biggest flower market of Manila and learn why there are many Filipinos working abroad.
  • Jewish Cemetery: Hear how the Philippines became a refuge for Jews during the Holocaust.
  • Rituals and Beliefs: Learn interesting Filipino practices for observing death and celebrating All Saints Day. Get an understanding how Filipino’s think about ghosts.
  • Residents: Understand why many people have decided to live in the cemetery.

  • AMENITIES: There are public toilets available in the surrounding area.
  • CAMERA POLICY: Please note that we have a strict NO CAMERA policy in the Cemetery. We try to be as less intrusive as possible and at the same time minimize any discomfort our tours can cause to the locals. Permits are also heavily needed in the cemetery. Please understand this and respect our policy. Cameras are allowed at all other stops during the tour.

PACKAGE 3: MARKET TOUR

Walk through the market area of Old Manila to get a taste of a true Filipino culture. All kinds of merchandise from local medicinal herbs, birds, flowers, candles, statues, clothing, fruit to digital gadgets can be found here. The Quiapo Church Area is the place to take a peek at the daily life of every Filipino combined with the Golden Mosque in the small Muslim area. This tour will give visitors a glimpse of a vibrant part of the Manila’s streets. Discover the infamous Chinatown and see how Filipino cuisine is deeply fused with old Chinese recipes and traditions. Try different street foods and get a taste of Manila.

  • Quiapo Church: Visit Quiapo Church, home of the Black Nazarene and surroundings of the church, the vibrant and busy streets of Manila, where you can experience the Filipino love for superstition.
  • Quiapo Market: Get to try the various well known local fruits like Ripe Mango, Green Mango, Jackfruit and Lansones. Also try other locally made Filipino Rice Cakes named “suman” and “sapin-sapin”.
  • Lackson Plaza: This monument is a tribute to Arsenio Lacson, the most popular city mayor.
  • Ongpin Street: This street marks the entrance of Chinatown. The street is filled with Chinese restaurants and other shops.

PACKAGE 4: BICYCLE TOUR

A Dutch inspired organization would be incomplete without a Bicycle tour! Explore the city as it wakes up or experience the everyday life of Filipinos through the traffic and chaotic streets of Manila in the afternoon. Enjoy the smiles of the Filipinos as you pass by their areas.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pass by the small slums of Gotamco – people there are always friendly.
  • Intramuros: Visit San Agustin Church and Fort Santiago and soak up the atmosphere of the Walled City, the oldest district and historic center of Manila.

  • Manila Bay: Cycle down Roxas Boulevard and enjoy the sea breeze and bay views.

  • MEETING POINT: JOLIBEE – Buendia Avenue corner Taft Avenue.
  • LANDMARKS: (1) LRT-1 Gil Puyat Train Station (2) Beside Greenwich Fast Food and (3) Across JAM Bus Liner. Our Bicycle Tour Set Up Point is: “Coffee & Bicycles”.
  • INCLUSIONS: Bicycle and helmets are provided and a drink during the tour. If desired please bring your own hat, sunblock/sunscreen, extra shirt and face towel.
  • LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: Manila is know to have extremely busy roads. The level of Difficulty is hard yet fulfilling as you experience the culture of the Filipinos.
  • AMENITIES: There are paid toilets that can be used in the surrounding area.
  • CAMERA POLICY: You are allowed to take photos on this tour. Please note that photos are not allowed to be taken when passing by the American Embassy.
